Specialty Collaboration in Action: CASE Supports Cancer Care for African Penguin at Denver Zoo

Two people with Keni the African Penguin

CASE recognizes that exceptional patient care is built on strong partnerships—not just within our hospital, but throughout the broader veterinary community. A recent collaboration with the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance (DZCA) is a powerful example of that teamwork in action.

Keni, a 16-year-old African penguin and cherished ambassador for the critically endangered species, was diagnosed with malignant melanoma on her beak. DZCA's veterinary and animal care teams quickly mobilized a multidisciplinary effort to ensure Keni received advanced diagnostics and a tailored cancer care plan. That’s where our specialists at CASE had the privilege of stepping in.

Through close coordination with the zoo’s internal team, CASE provided expert consultation and oncology support, including diagnostics and personalized treatment recommendations based on Keni’s unique clinical presentation. Our goal was the same as always: to deliver collaborative, comprehensive care that improves quality of life—even in the most complex or unusual cases.

Malignant melanoma is a cancer of pigmented skin cells. They are more common in dogs and rare in cats (and penguins!). The treatment of choice, when possible, is with surgery to remove the tumor. Radiation therapy can be used when surgery is not possible or after surgery if the tumor was not entirely removed. Immunotherapy or chemotherapy is offered to patients at high risk of developing cancer spread.

Keni’s treatment plan included radiation therapy and immunotherapy using a canine melanoma vaccine. Keni received her four radiation treatments at CASE’s hospital in Boulder and two additional immunotherapy vaccinations at the Denver Zoo. We are pleased to share that Keni is responding well to treatment thus far. The teams at the DZCA and CASE Pet Cancer Center are closely monitoring her progress with serial imaging and booster vaccinations. Her case underscores what is possible when referring partners and specialty teams collaborate in pursuit of a common goal. Together, we are providing the quality of care that makes a lasting impact.
